Lightening Strike Damage

This strike was not a direct strike to the “Antenna” but rather the Pine tree. Notice the tree Bark where the strick flowed on one side of the Pine tree. Notice the strip of bark removed at the strike area. See the next picture below to see the strike flowed “through the tree” to the other side.

The strike flowed through the tree to this side of the tree and along the tree stock down to the limb, then along the limb then arced across the wide space between the limb and the Balun’s ground strap. Look closely and you can see the bark stripped off the limb where the arc between the limb and the Balun’s ground strap occurred.

The strike flowed down the coax “braid” and dissipated through the PL-259 laying on the ground below the tree.

Lightening will find the path of least resistance to ground regardless where that ground is. If the ground is inside your shack/house then there’s the possibility an arc can and most likely will occur that can lead to “Fire”.
